ICAL's English and ESOL Course Summaries
Level 5 League of Legends (Intermediate Low/Intermediate Mid)
The fifth course of the series is a fascinating adventure that explores legends from every aspect: legendary places, legendary people, legendary characters, literary legends, legends of history and legends of art and music! There are plenty of activities and experiences to keep students busy and engaged!
League of Legends is our longest course (180 lessons) and the “threshold” course which brings students well into the Intermediate proficiency level. The League of Legends course has an expansive Suggestopedic text that invites students on a search for legends. The text highlights legendary landmarks and people all over the world from the Statue of Liberty in New York, to composers Bach and Handel, artistic legends Mary Cassatt and Edgar Degas to natural legends such as the Great Barrier Reef, the Grand Canyon and Mount Everest.
This course integrates all subjects – language arts, math, science, history, geography and fine arts. Students explore the history of music, the USA and literary legends in every unit of the course. Other content streams include the natural wonders of the modern world, legendary people (e.g. Florence Nightingale, Marco Polo), and reading skills (phonetic analysis, structural analysis, word features and word meaning aids).
Students experience language arts, science and math centers as a transition between units. In the language arts center, students complete an in-depth series of reading activities, sharing books in 11 different ways from rewriting stories as picture books, to writing character descriptions to writing poetry and reviews of the chosen books. In science centers, students become environmental guardians and analyze the preservation of the natural wonders of the modern world. Math centers deal with mathematical concepts as they relate to content of the course e.g. coordinate graphing, statistics, operations and computations.
The abundance of mastery demonstrations throughout the course provides ample measurement of student proficiency gains, as well as gains in self-esteem, teamwork, and critical thinking skills.
